Passed away October 29, 2022 at age 87 at the Highland Living Center in Pittsford.
Born in Geneva, Bill was a 1953 graduate of Geneva High School and 1957 graduate of Hobart College. Bill's career began having published a book on Korea and writing for the New York Times. He then used his writing skills for collegiate development, working at St. John Fisher, RIT, and SUNY Geneseo. An avid photographer, Bill was most proud of his work with the SUNY Geneseo crew team. After retirement, Bill stayed involved with college life by reviewing scholarship applications of students to various institutions. A lifelong supporter of the Eastman Museum, Memorial Art Gallery, and the Brighton Public Library, Bill spent many afternoons enjoying the cultural events of the city.
He is survived by nieces and nephew, Jane Zwerner (Daniel) of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Sandra Cohen (Richard) of Albertson, New York, William Joseph Mathews of Rio de Janeiro, and Carol Beier (John) of Cranford, New Jersey; great-nieces and great-nephews, Jennifer, David, Timothy, Jeffrey, Kimberly, Elizabeth, Andrew, Rebecca, and Sophie. Predeceased by brother, Kenneth Mathews; sisters, Marion Weiss and Dorothy Blakley; and niece, Mary Margaret Moffett.
A Graveside Funeral was held at White Haven Memorial Park in Pittsford, New York on Monday, October 31. Memorial donations may be made to either the George Eastman Museum or the Memorial Art Museum in Rochester.
