Tallmadge, Ruth Catherine (Laible)

Penfield: April 24, 2014 at age 105, lovingly cared for at her daughter Anne's home. Predeceased by her husband, Edgar Tallmadge, and granddaughter, Michelle Tallmadge. She is survived by her sons, Carl Tallmadge (MaryAnn) of West Chester, OH; John Tallmadge (Mary) of Logan, UT; Timothy Tallmadge (Sandy) of Watertown, NY; daughters, Anne Krutell of Penfield; Ellen VanVranken (Barkley) of Winterport, ME; Alice Tallmadge of Springfield, OR; Caroline Tallmadge of Ottawa, Ontario; 13 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

Born in Lyons, NY, Ruth grew up on a farm and was a 1931 graduate of Cornell University, majoring in Home Economics. She met her husband Edgar there and together they imbued in their children the importance of education, work and fun. On yearly camping trips with Edgar and her children, she cooked over an open fire and slept in heavy canvas tents, often in the rain. She nurtured an impressive flower garden and the "victory garden" she and Edgar started during WWII. She and Edgar spent many happy winters on the west coast of Mexico. She loved to read and was a member of several book clubs. Her eye for beauty was evident in her creative floral arrangements. To the end she was a sharp judge of character with an ironic sense of humor.

In 2011, Ruth was honored as one of two attendees at Cornell's first-ever 80th Class Reunion. She was a 60-year member of St. John the Evangelist parish. She belonged to the Cornell Club and to AAUW, where she played bridge until she was 104. She was the heart and center of our family, and she will be with us always.
