Joan Moore Hensler

Born June 4, 1930 in Rochester, NY to Mildred and John Moore. Joan Moore Hensler, 89, beloved wife, mother, sister, friend and community leader passed away on October 5, 2019, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Ray Hensler; her three daughters, and their families: Barb Gradala, Anne (Jeff) Staten, Kate (Adam Paal) Hensler; five grandchildren: Matthew Gradala, Maggie Gradala, Joseph Staten, Peter Staten and Elizabeth Hensler-Paal; sister, Barbara Moore, RSM; cousin Mary Lou Lockmeyer and family; and many dear friends.
 
Joan was a graduate of Our Lady of Mercy High School and received her B.A. from Nazareth College. She taught in public and parochial schools in her early career. Joan’s community engagement included volunteer work through her Catholic parish, in the community with the underserved, and in the Democratic party. 

Joan served three terms as Councilwoman for the City of Rochester and was active in state and national politics. Her areas of impact included neighborhood development, equitable housing, and Rochester’s Sister Cities Program.
 
Joan joined the University of Rochester Medical School to launch the Students of Rochester Outreach (SRO), a program giving medical students the opportunity to volunteer in city clinics, schools, and other sites, emphasizing the importance of community service. Her giving spirit and passion for social justice informed her work and life, influencing everyone with whom she interacted.
 
Joan and Ray were very active in their neighborhood parish and Catholic organizations. They traveled extensively with friends. Joan was a multitalented person who loved literature, art, design and cooking. Their home was a gathering place for friends and family, enjoying many good meals and joyful celebrations together. 
 
Calling Hours will be Monday, Oct. 7, 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at the funeral home (495 N. Winton Road). A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, Oct. 8, 10 AM at St Mary’s Church, 15 St. Mary's Place, Rochester, NY 14607. Burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catholic Family Center’s Refugee Program, 87 N. Clinton Ave., Rochester, NY 14604; or the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104.
