Jim was born in Rochester, NY, graduated from East High School and was a member of ꓰΣΧ (Epsilon Sigma Chi) Fraternity. He spent many summers in his youth with family at our cottage in Lavallette, New Jersey.
Jim enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1974 at age 19. His military operational services were many, including but not limited to: Field Artillery Operations Chief, Platoon Sergeant USMC Silent Drill Team. Being so handsome, disciplined and rugged, his photo was placed in the “Welcome to the Marines” handbook. His service included detachments abroad and aboard many US Navy Ships including USS Newport, USS New Orleans, USS Nassau. He received numerous badges, ribbons, medals, meritorious commendations and awards, along with letters of appreciation. “Once a Marine, always a Marine”.
Jim retired from the Corps after serving more than 21 years and settled in the town of Evening Shade, Missouri. He was self-employed while attending college at Columbia of Missouri, was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BS in Business Administration. In addition, he earned an Associate’s Degree in General Studies from a Junior college. His credentials led to a position with the State of Missouri Social Services, Division of Child Support Enforcement for 11 years.
While going through treatments for his first bout with cancer, Jim would often visit the Children’s Hospital and have dinner with the kids to give them hope and inspiration. He was also well-read, a true history buff, loved woodworking and drawing, and was an avid Jeopardy watcher. He cared for his friends and family deeply, and often told his wife that his love for her was “beyond measure”, and showed her just that.
Special thanks to the VA, GLWACH, DDCI, Phelps Health, Three Rivers Hospice, Deacon Mike (St. Vincent DePaul, Roby), Fr. Joseph (St. Francis DeSales, Lebanon), and for all of the love and support from family and friends, especially Bob and Ursula Hammel.
