David E. Angelico, aka Tex, Texas Son, D’Angelico, and Griz, passed away on October 19th, 2024, from complications of multiple sclerosis (MS). He was 71 years old. He had lived at Monroe Community Hospital Nursing Home since 2012.
David was born in Rochester, NY on June 7, 1953, to the late Dr. Alfred Angelico and Sara Lawrence Angelico. In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by a younger brother, Robert “Ribs” Angelico, and his stepmother, Pat Rosenzweig.
David is survived by his son, David A. (Andrea Werwinski) Angelico; his brothers, Alfred (Vicki) Angelico, Michael Angelico, Thomas Angelico, John (Rebecca Holtzman) Angelico, and Joseph Angelico; his sister-in-law, Francis Barry Ryan; his dear friend, Sandy Pickel; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many close friends.
Dave was an amazing guitar player and artist. He began his artistic journey at a very young age. He had his first band at the age of 11. On his 13th birthday, his dad surprised him with a shiny electric guitar. He began guitar lessons at Levis Music Store, but as Dave says, he was “99% self-taught”. His teenage years had many struggles, but he knew he wanted to be a great guitar player. Dave went to San Francisco for a short time, where he had fun playing music in the streets. He came back to Rochester and knew he had to get serious about a music career.
For many decades, you could find Dave involved in the local music scene. He also performed in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, all along the East Coast from Marathon, Florida, to Canada, and the Portland Oregon Blues Festival. He played with many talented musicians in bands that included: Strider, D’Angelico Band, and The Texas Son Blues Band. He also released multiple incredible albums: Boot Leg Blues Guitar, Iced Blue, The Blues According to Texas Son, D’Angelico Mystical Moments, and many others. Tex also played piano, harmonica, and bass guitar, along with being a singer, song writer, and guitar teacher.
Dave’s artistic talents also included drawing and painting. He was known under Vinnie’s the Hood, D’Angelico, and D’Angelico Sign Co. You could find Dave’s signs all throughout Rochester and beyond, in many car dealership windows and windshields, as well as at other businesses. You could also find Dave at art festivals, displaying his beautiful pencil drawings, watercolors, and oil paintings.
Besides art and music, Dave loved to play cards, games, and go to the movies. He was also a fitness enthusiast and an avid runner, having ran 6,000 miles over time.
We are all very blessed that Dave shared his amazing talents, friendship, and love with us. He was an inspiration, not only with his music and art, but with who he was, as a fun and caring person and father.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation in David's name to the MS Society. Family and friends are welcome to gather for a celebration of Dave’s life on Sunday, November 17th from 2-6 pm at the Rush Creekside Inn.
