Ann Weintraub Obituary

Born on November 3, 1938, in the Bronx, NY, her life choices were shaped by her parents' values of love, justice, and charity, fundamental to the best of Jewish tradition. She grew up in an apartment house with diverse ethnic and racial working-class families and received an excellent public school education, which provided a sound foundation for living and learning.

She moved with her family to Rochester, NY, in 1951 and completed her high school education at Monroe High School. With that faculty's support, she gained admission to the University of Rochester and thus became the first member of her family to attend college.

She received a BS in Education from the University of Rochester and, in 1960, joined the teaching ranks of the Rochester City School District, where she taught elementary school students. Later, she specialized in reading and math education for learners requiring additional educational support. She received a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Rochester with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction. Her 34-year education career in RCSD included the following positions: Reading-Math Teacher, Schools 1 and 23; Central Office Elementary School Consultant; Reading teacher, Wilson Junior High School; Vice Principal, School 25; and Principal, School 37.

Her RCSD Central Office appointments included leadership positions in curriculum, program development, staff development, and teacher evaluation. As the Supervising Director of Elementary Education, she provided leadership, supervision, and evaluation services to all RCSD elementary schools and principals. Collegial work with the Rochester Teachers Association led to the design and implementation of a Lead Teacher mentoring and peer evaluation program. She was also the instructor for the graduate course in Curriculum, Instruction, and Supervision of the Elementary School at Nazareth College.

Her civic life included leadership roles in the League of Women Voters/Rochester Metro, Friends of the Women's Rights National Historic Park, Latina Unidas, the YWCA, and the Women's Giving Circle, a donor advised fund of the Rochester Community Foundation. She initiated and provided leadership in the formation of a naturally occurring retirement community, "Browncroft Home for a Lifetime," a program of the Browncroft Neighborhood Association. The program's goal is to provide support services for "aging in place," including BNA's "Be On Your Way" volunteer transportation service.

She moved to Valley Manor, an Episcopal Senior Life independent living community, in 2015, where she enjoyed a rich and active life serving as a Board Member of the Residents Association and its Program Chair.

She immensely enjoyed Rochester's rich arts and cultural offerings, her many travels abroad, her time at the cottage in Lake Bluff, Sodus, NY, and memorable cross-country camping trips. Time with a good book was always treasured, as was the beauty of nature.

She expressed how blessed she felt with a wonderful family. Ann is predeceased by her parents, Irving and Shirley Weintraub; her uncle, Sol Dworkin; and her sister, Geraldine Weintraub; as well as her forever true loves, Ursula W. Reiners and Arthur J. Connors. She is survived by her brother, Philip Weintraub; sister-in-law, Diana Weintraub; her niece, Jenna Weintraub; and her husband, Sam Waters; The Browncroft neighbors also survive her; her extended family of close friends: the 'City Girls', Book Club, and Valley Manor residents; and the the Keitzels of Bremen, Germany; the Connors clan; the Novado's of Syracuse, and their offspring in New Hampshire and New Jersey.

She spent the last three years at the Jewish Home of Rochester, and the family would like to thank the staff for the care and kindness she received. She felt that she had been blessed with a happy and fulfilling life.
