April 18, 1950 to April 7, 2019
In Memoriam. Our dear Glenda loved life. She loved family, friends, neighbors. She loved being a mother. She loved reading, quilting, conversing, laughing. Her passion for justice, right-thinking, and wrestling with the depth of our spiritual journeys was palpable. As a pastor she showed the love of God in Scriptures, in pastoral care, in community building.
From a vibrant childhood in Chicago that included elocution lessons to her years of retirement as a beloved mentor and colleague Glenda was a curious, thoughtful, God-infused witness to a life of love. She served the Henrietta UCC, Webster UCC, and Salem UCC in the Rochester area, breaking barriers in each congregation. She also was Director of Spiritual Life for Heritage Christian Services, and a Regional Conference Minister for the NY Conference, UCC. Publication of her memoir, Lessons from Katherine, was an especially proud moment in her life.
Grieving Glenda's death are her husband, Tom; her son, Mark; her brothers, Edward (Wilma) and Bert (Mary Beth); 5 in-laws; 11 nieces and nephews; 3 grand nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, friends and church members. Cheering Glenda's entry to a new life are her daughter, Katherine; parents, Lambert and Henrietta Dekker Wierenga; father-in-law, Tunis Prins; brother-in-law Mark William Prins.
Her full and marvelous life with us ended on April 7 when Glenda hopped on an express train to glory. Her new life is just beginning. On Saturday we will celebrate her life and affirm together her belief in resurrection and a life beyond the one we shared with her. Her memorial service will be held at 2 pm Saturday, May 4, at her church home, Mountain Rise UCC, 2 Mountain Rise, Fairport, NY.
Please honor Glenda's life by treating each person you meet with love and generosity, by reading a book next week, and by visiting someone you know who has difficulty getting out and about.
Memorials in her honor are welcomed at Mountain Rise UCC, Mary Cariola Childrens Center, WXXI Public Broadcasting.
