VETERANS PRIDE INITIATIVE

Flag Code Change- Veterans can Hand-Salute the Flag
A recent change to Section 9 of the US Flag Code, written into Defense Authorization Act of 2008, now gives veterans and members of the US Armed Forces the authority to render a hand salute to the flag, whether or not in uniform, or wearing the apparel of a VSO (Veterans Service Organization) such as the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, or Vietnam Veteran's Cap.
Public Law No. 110-181 changes Section 9 of Title 4, United States Code, inserting the following:

Compliance to the U.S. Flag Code is voluntary, and this change in the code will be acted upon "voluntary" too. But please be sensitive to this new rule; we will see more and more people using a hand-salute while in civilian clothing.

VETERANS PRIDE INITIATIVE
"To show off their pride in military service, former Secretary of Affairs Jim Nicholson urged veterans to wear their military medals on civilian clothes in national patriotic holidays, including Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day."
